Kitchen Blinds

The Right Kitchen Blinds Make a Real Difference

Most kitchen blinds fail within the first year because they can't handle moisture and heat. Ours are built specifically for kitchens.

Your kitchen is harder on window blinds than any other room in your home. There's constant steam from cooking, temperature swings, and grease particles in the air. Most blinds will start showing damage within months. That's why we built our zebra blinds specifically to handle kitchen conditions. They're water-resistant, fade-resistant, and designed to look good for years without breaking down.

Best Blind Types for Kitchen Windows

Not all blinds work equally well in kitchens. The type you choose depends on your window size, how much light you want, and what kind of heat management matters most.

Semi-blockout zebra blinds

Work best for most kitchens. The open and closed stripe pattern lets you filter light while maintaining some visibility through the window. From outside, people can't see directly in, but you still get natural working light. The fabric is water-resistant so cooking steam doesn't cause damage. This is the most popular choice because it balances light control, privacy, and practicality.

Blockout zebra blinds

Better if your kitchen gets intense afternoon sun or you want to control heat aggressively. They block nearly all light and heat. If you have a west-facing kitchen window that makes the space uncomfortably hot in summer, blockout blinds solve that problem. The trade-off is your kitchen feels more enclosed when they're closed. Most people use blockout when they need to manage heat, and keep them open otherwise.

Motorised Zebra Blinds (optional)

Make sense if you have multiple large windows or windows you can't easily reach. Control everything from a remote or your phone. It's not essential, but it's genuinely convenient if you're constantly adjusting blinds throughout the day.

The key factor in kitchens is the material, not the style. Water-resistant fabrics matter infinitely more than whether you pick one blind type over another.

Affordable Kitchen Blinds with Moisture Resistance

The reason some kitchen blinds fail and others last years comes down to materials. Here's what actually holds up.

High-precision laser-cut polyester fabric for water-resistant zebra kitchen blinds

Polyester fabric base. This is a synthetic material, not cotton or linen. The advantage in a kitchen is straightforward: synthetics resist moisture and don't support mold the way natural materials do. When steam from cooking hits the blind, it doesn't soak in. It evaporates. Your blind might feel slightly damp after heavy cooking, but it dries completely within hours. No mold smell, no permanent damage.

Water-resistant backing. The back of the fabric has a treatment that repels water. This prevents moisture from being absorbed into the material from the back side. In a kitchen with constant steam and cooking moisture, this backing matters enormously. It's the difference between a blind that lasts two years and one that lasts five.

UV-stable dyes. Colors don't fade from heat or sunlight because the dyes are bonded into the polyester at the molecular level, not just sitting on the surface. You'll have customers coming back after years because their blinds still look new.

Non-corrosive hardware. The brackets and operating mechanism need to resist moisture too. We use stainless steel or anodised aluminium, never painted metal that rusts. The blind mechanism matters as much as the fabric.

The bottom line: water-resistant doesn't mean waterproof or completely sealed. It means the material won't deteriorate when exposed to kitchen moisture. It won't absorb water, won't grow mold, and won't degrade over time the way other fabrics do.

How to Keep Kitchen Blinds Looking New

Water-resistant blinds need basic maintenance to stay in good shape. The good news is this takes minutes.

Regular dusting. Once a week or every two weeks depending on how much you cook, run a soft cloth along the slats. Dust and grease particles settle on every surface, and removing them before they build up keeps blinds looking fresh. This takes three minutes per window.

Spot cleaning. If something spatters on the blind, wipe it while it's fresh. Don't let spills dry. For dried-on grease, use a slightly soapy cloth and gentle pressure. Rinse with a clean, damp cloth and air dry. Never use harsh chemicals or aggressive scrubbing. The material is tough but doesn't need punishment.

Deep cleaning. Once or twice a year, lay the blind flat and use soft-bristled brush with gentle soapy water. Work from top to bottom so water drips down, not sideways into the mechanism. Let them dry completely before rehanging.

The reason water-resistant blinds are worth the investment is precisely this: you can actually maintain them. Other blinds either require constant replacement or become impossible to keep clean. These are somewhere in between, which in practice means they stay looking good for years with minimal effort.

How to Measure Kitchen Windows for Blinds Installation

Kitchen installation has specific considerations because water splashing and steam are constant realities.

Over the sink. Mount brackets as high as possible while still fitting your window frame. This keeps the bottom of the blind away from direct sink splash and water spray. Most people can reach their blind without standing in the sink, and water drips away naturally from your counter.

Above the stove. Keep the blind mounted at least 30cm above the stovetop surface. This gives cooking heat a chance to rise away before it hits the blind material. Heat damage is less common than moisture damage, but proximity to a stove matters.

Measuring. This is the part most people find confusing. Measure the width of your window opening at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Use the smallest measurement. For height, measure from where you want the blind to start (usually just above the window frame) to where you want it to stop. Standard brackets work for most drywall or plaster walls. Concrete or unusual frames might need different brackets, which we offer as options during ordering.

Installation itself typically takes 20 to 30 minutes per window for standard sizes. Our guides walk people through it step by step. The hardest part is usually locating wall studs for solid mounting. If someone isn't comfortable drilling into walls, local handyperson services typically install blinds for a small fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Will my kitchen blinds get damaged by cooking steam?
No. Water-resistant fabric doesn't absorb moisture the way other materials do. Steam evaporates instead of soaking in. Run your extractor fan while cooking and for 10 minutes after, and your blinds stay protected. This is the entire reason water-resistant fabric matters.
Q: How often do I need to clean kitchen blinds?
If you cook daily, light dusting every one to two weeks keeps them looking new. Spot clean spills as they happen. Deep cleaning once or twice a year is plenty. It's genuinely minimal maintenance.
Q: Can I install these over my kitchen sink?
Yes, but mount them as high as possible above the sink to minimize direct water splash. Water that does splash evaporates because the polyester is water-resistant. It's not a problem unless water sits on the blind constantly, which won't happen with normal sink use.
Q: Do these blinds fade from sunlight?
No. The dyes are UV-stable and bonded into the polyester. They don't break down from heat or constant sunlight exposure. Kitchen windows get hammered by sun, but your blinds stay vibrant for years.
Q: How long does installation take?
Most people install them around 10 minutes per window if they're standard sizes. The hardest part is finding wall studs. Our guides walk through it step by step. If you're not comfortable drilling, local services usually charge a small fee for installation.
Q: Can I add motorisation later if I start with manual blinds?
No, you'd need new blinds. Motorisation needs to be ordered at the time of purchase because it requires different internal mechanisms. But it's available as an option during ordering if you think you might want it.

Where to Buy Kitchen Blinds Online

You can order custom Zebra kitchen blinds online and have them delivered to your home. The process is straightforward: measure your window, choose your blind type (semi-blockout or blockout), pick your colour, and order.

Delivery typically takes 12 working days except during Christmas, pretty busy at that time and it can be around 15-20 working days. Most people find that waiting a few weeks for the right blind is infinitely better than rushing into the wrong one and dealing with it for years.

We ship worldwide and offer delivery to most locations. Standard installation guides are included, and customer support is available if you have questions during the process.
